まどろみの間隙をぬうようにして、ぎっっと網膜の裏のあたりをにらみ続けてゆくと、目のまには見知らぬ巨人らのすがた。みな沸騰したように笑いあっている。
一方ぼくはというと、妙にからだがふわふわして、どうにも身動きがとれない。
そうこうするうちに、一匹の巨人が目のまえにやってきて、慇懃にほくそ笑んだ。
――あぁ、とうとうたべられてしまうのだな。
ぼくは慄然として、不覚にも麁相してしまう。
だが件の巨人は、顔の皮膚をやみらめっちゃに歪ませながら奇声をはりあげるばかりで、いっこうに牙をむいてこない。
――ぜんたいこいつは、どういうつもりだろう？
巨人はなおも滑稽な動作を続けた。みにくいかんばせを、ぶあつい両掌でおおい隠し、ぼくの目のまえで、なんどもなんども開陳して見せる。
奇妙なことに、ぼくはこれを知っているという気がする。
陋劣な、それでいてどこかしら懐かしい反復運動のいちいちを、ぼくは既に知っていると案じる。
